The third cemetery administered by Trinity Church is St. Paul’s Chapel, located on Church Street between Fulton and Vesey Streets. Built in 1764, St. Paul’s Chapel is the oldest existing church building in Manhattan. It is best known as being directly across the street from the east wing of the World Trade Center. When the World Trade Center collapsed after being attacked by terrorists on September 11, 2001, St. Paul’s was amazingly unscathed. Remarkably, not a single window was broken or a gravestone damaged by the falling debris. In the weeks that followed, St. Paul’s became a focal point for rescue activities, and its walls and fences were used for impromptu memorials.
